Over $5,500 in extra training courses to be spent on local firefighters – says fire chief

The Province, last week, announced $500,000 to Municipalities, First Nations, and Metis Settlements for fire training programs.
The Fire Services Training Program helps local firefighters and fire services personnel access training that reflects industry standards and meets the needs of the communities they serve.
“When Albertans need them most, firefighters are always there for them. They put their lives on the line to protect ours, and we’re making sure they have the training needed to do their jobs safely and effectively. These investments will help local teams respond with the skill and confidence to protect Albertans,” said Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams.
Training supported through the program includes ice water rescues, hazardous material responses and a wide variety of courses that ensure firefighters have the resources and preparation needed to protect Albertans, their families and their communities.
In Lamont County, Emergency Services Chief Bo Moore said the County applied for funding through the program and was successful in achieving $5,589 for training courses for the next year.
“This helps fund National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certified Apparatus Driver and Pump Operator courses, and an NFPA Instructor Level 2 course,” Moore said, in an email through County Communication Coordinator Jay Zaal.
“The funds also support in-house certified training and offsets the rising cost of hosting these courses.”
In 2025/26, funds received were higher, but this was due to the program doubling the money available to $1 million dollars.
