Suspected asbestos exposure shuts down Tofield Hotel

On Monday, March 30, the Tofield Mercury received an anonymous tip from the public that the Tofield Hotel had been shut down due to asbestos exposure inside the hotel.

From what was visible from the official document posted on the Tofield Hotel door, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issued a stop work order to the Tofield Hotel on March 26.

Hotel management declined to comment, however on April 2 a post on their social media page was published to “address recent rumours regarding our property and to provide clear, transparent information about our current status.”

“The safety of our guests and staff is our absolute priority. Following a third-party inquiry regarding the presence of asbestos, we took immediate action to close the property temporarily. While our preliminary lab testing returned negative results for any hazardous materials, we have decided to go a step further to ensure total peace of mind.

“We are currently conducting a comprehensive, building-wide hygiene assessment. Once this process is complete, we will receive a formal certification from OHS to confirm the building is 100 per cent safe for occupancy,” the post said.

At that time, management anticipated that the hotel would be able to resume operations the following week, however the caution tape and posted notice were still on the entrance door at publication deadline.

“While this rigorous testing and certification process is detailed and time-consuming, we are moving as quickly as possible.
