Bruderheim property owner seeks restitution for ongoing sewer issues

By John Mather, Staff Reporter

Garnet Kalyn, who owns a rental property in Bruderheim, appeared before council May 6, to ask for some financial restitution for several sewer repairs he had initiated during the past years.

Kalyn passed around photos of the issues he had had.

“The Town agreed with me that there were issues,” Kalyn told council. “We had the line scoped and the damage was on the Town’s property not mine,” he told council. “I paid for half of that bill.”

In September 2025 he paid an additional $850 to have the same problem repaired and again in March of this year, he said. “My line is a PCV pipe and you can see (from photos supplied) there is a dip in the line on Town property,” he said. “This is an issue which is going to keep occurring.”

He said there was a break in the pipe on the Town’s property and said the line went 53 feet to his property line; the break was at more than 60 feet.

He wanted to be reimbursed  for the costs he incurred.

“It had to be paid and so I paid the company,” he said.

Kalyn asked if the Town would fix this issue and also have the Town look at an issue across the street from his property at the same time.

“I will leave it in your hands,” said Kalyn.

Councillor Arlie Young asked how long the tenants were impacted and how much it had cost him?

Kalyn replied repairs had been fixed in a day when they occurred but his costs over the entire period was almost $4,000.

He said the Town had paid for half of the first issue and he paid for the rest.

Councillor Luis Diaz asked if this was going to keep reoccurring and Kalyn replied it would unless the pipe was repaired. He said the break in the line was occurring around the 75-foot mark but he couldn’t actually scope the line past 60 feet.

“It’s old clay pipe on the street,” he said.

Kalyn added he had worked with Bruderheim Chief Operating Officer Dennis Tomuschat before on the issue which had been reoccurring periodically since 2023.

Kalyn added he had supplied a video detailing the issue to Tomuschat.

Council then accepted the presentation as information to be discussed at a later time.
