Irma School will be receiving three new modular classrooms that are expected to be in place for the start of the next school year.

The move is being welcomed with Irma School being the fastest growing school in the school division.

“The Buffalo Trail Public School Board of Trustees is thrilled to announce significant investment in our local schools and communities, following the recent approval of modular classroom funding from the Minister of Education and Childcare,” stated an April 17 press release from BTPS.

The school division states it has also been granted funding to relocate two existing modular units to the new Wainwright Elementary School site. “This relocation will allow for the continued partnership between Wainwright Elementary School and the Wainwright Children’s Centre,” states the release.

The Alberta government announced that it is investing $600 million over three years to deliver more modular classrooms “to schools facing the greatest need.”

With school enrolment “growing rapidly,” states the province, there are now more than 80,000 new students in Alberta that have arrivedwithin the last three years.

Reasons given for the increase include a “record level inter-provincial migration,” as well as high immigration levels.

“Schools are under pressure, and Alberta’s government is taking action to deliver more space across the province,” states the government in its release.

The BTPS board has credited its own “dedicated, ongoing advocacy by the board of trustees,” for making the modulars for their Division possible.

“The board has remained committed to highlighting the capacity challenges within the Irma School and working collaboratively with the provincial government to find sustainable solutions,” stated the BTPS board.

“Furthermore this success would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the communities of Irma and Wainwright,” stated BTPS.

“Your voice, engagement and commitment to the future of our children provided the necessary momentum to bring these projects to fruition.”
