Strathcona County RCMP makes arrest following explosive device investigation

On April 7, 2026, around 1:30 a.m., a member of the Strathcona County RCMP was conducting proactive patrols in a parking lot off Pembina Road and Broadmoor Boulevard.  The RCMP member conducted a license plate query on a Buick Verano which determined the plate was not a match to the vehicle and was not to be affixed to a registered motor vehicle.

A traffic stop was initiated and the RCMP member observed bear mace inside the vehicle, and the adult male driver was attempting to conceal what was later determined to be a knife, down the side of the driver’s seat.

The driver was arrested and a vehicle search incidental to arrest revealed drug paraphernalia and an improvised explosive device (IED).  The immediate area, which included a gas station, was evacuated, and the Alberta RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) was called in for assistance.

EDU attended the location and rendered the device safe.  Following testing of the device, it was determined the contents of the device were energetic, however the battery component was not connected.

Andrew Timothy Walker, 36, a resident of Strathcona County, was charged with:

•             Possession of a weapon contrary to an Order (x3)

•             Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2)

•             Possession of an explosive

•             Fail to comply with a drug demand

•             Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

•             Possession for the purpose of trafficking

•             Resisting a peace officer

Following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Walker was remanded into custody and will appeal before the Alberta Court of Justice on April 22, 2026.
