Viking by-election date set after Nearing resigns

There are more changes coming to Viking Town Council. Viking Councillor Clint Nearing resigned his position on Viking Town Council before Christmas precipitating the need to hold another by-election in the spring.

Nearing had already been a full-term councillor previously before deciding to run for the position of mayor in the last general municipal election. After losing that race, he took the opportunity to rejoin council by running in a by-election where he won by acclamation.

But now Nearing has resigned from council and a date was set for a by-election during the Dec. 18 regular council meeting.

Nearing officially resigned on Dec. 7 at 9:51 p.m. giving the town 120 days to hold a by-election. The by-election date was set for Tuesday, April 2, with nominations closing 28 days earlier on Tuesday, March 5.

Council also appointed the town’s Chief Administrative Officer Doug Lefsrud as Returning Officer, and town employee Tammy Voltner as substitute returning officer.

With Nearing gone, council also took some time to replace his name on boards and committees with those of other councillors for an interim period until the election is held.
